Hi All Team! Whether who have photos or drawings ARO 24-series with 5-speed gearbox, from down, from different angles and points? I would like to see, how it was placed on a frame. Whether the serious changes in a design of a frame were spent or 5-speed gearbox it is possible to mount on any frame? All variants are interesting to me, and ARO, and EATON, but especially PEUGEOT and TOYOTA (2 LT engine + gearbox). Photos maybe to send on my e-mail or placing in this theme... Beforehand I thank for Yours answers! ...in me tries to be born an idea... |

There is no major change in the design of the frame. Most of the 5 speed gear boxes that were fitted on ARO are longer than de 4 speed original 'box, so the solution was to mount a cross beam, a simple rectangular bar situated at the rear of the transfer case, underneath it, to support the gearbox and the transfer box. I think a should have some pictures at home, I will post them later. |

You stand corrected, my friend. Premises: We're only considering Romanian Engines - L25/L30/L27/DX28/TDX/D127 Fact: There are 5 possible models of 5-speed gearboxes which fit, to the best of my current knowledge 1. First version - they took the 4 speed gearbox, added an extension, and then the transfer case. It's basically a 4 + 1 type. Not very reliable or practical, I wouldn't personally use this. Naturally, longer than the 4-speed-box. 2. Second version - they redesigned the aluminum housing, to make it a dedicated 5 speed gearbox. These aren't particularly great either, and I wouldn't bother. Longer than the 4 speed box, not sure compared to the one above though. 3. Second version - Borg Warner gears and syncros - Same as #2, but with quality parts - very good, but not many were made. This should be worth it, but harder to find, and more expensive. Same as #2 length-wise 4. "Sfantu Gheorghe" box - A completely different box, designed by a private company, not ARO Campulung. Because this company didn't have the technology to cast aluminum, they used a hard-iron casing (same as the Brasov Engine Block). However the parts inside were very good (although locally produced) so this is a very sturdy, reliable and strong box - albeit a bit heavy. For this reason, they added a supplemental cross-beam to support the gearbox - easy to do it yourself - and it's the only Romanian made box which has this beam. It's just 30mm longer than the standard 4-speed box, so it's basically safe to use, with no other mods (except for the support beam) 5. Eaton box - Consists of two aluminum halves mated longitudinally by rivets. Reliable, though not exceptionally strong. (I'd rather abuse a 4-speed-box). Bon apetit! |

Thanks Stefan! It is the more interesting information! ... But, me very much interests - AS, IT IS LOCATED ON A FRAME of 24-series??? I have measured ALL accessible transmissions! They are not located on frame 24! The central cross-beam of a frame is prevents!!! Therefore, who can, give a photo from down, available for You (ARO, PEUGEOT, EATON, TOYOTA) of variants, of application 5 speeds, on chassy 24. Please! I want to know, as, it did! Very much it would be desirable to set a similar question for Dan Chiriac, about TOYOTA, but... Beforehand I thank for Yours answers! |

I don't have pictures at hand, but will try to assemble some. Basically, all the Romanian boxes are just very slightly longer than the standard 4-box, and not at all wider. This is why they don't have any other support beam, or they don't "hit" the central cross beam you're referring to. Otherwise said, the frame is 100% the same, and the clutch "casing" as well. Just the SfantuGheorghe cast-iron box is heavy, so it needs an additional support beam underneath it. The Toyota box is the same as LJ70, and it won't fit other engines. It is however longer - just how much longer I'm not sure, nor do I know any other mods to the chassis - though I can imagine there are some. |

I now check on suitability three variants transmissions: 1. From TOYOTA HiLux/Surf, part time. 2. From NISSAN PATROL GR 60, part time. 3. From JEEP WRANGLER/Cheroke (tr.box NV 242), full time. But they very "long". A problem - average cross-beam of a frame. |
