In 1976 compania Portugheza SEMAL (Sociedade Electro-Mecânica de Automóveis, Ldª) a inceput productia modelelor PORTARO sub licenta de ARO ROMANIA. PORTARO care inseamna Portugalia+ARO, a fost produs initial in fabrica de utilaje agricole din Tramagal si imediat a devenit unul din cele mai bune 4x4 facute in Portugalia, ajungand la renumele de mit in industria auto pana la finele anilor 80.
